Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park hosts ski marathon
The Michigan Department of Natural Resources invites cross country ski enthusiasts to participate in the Porcupine Mountains Ski Marathon, a 21K and 42K classic-style ski race, Feb. 1, at Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park.
The start and finish of the race will be near the Porcupine Mountains Winter Sports Area Chalet, and the course follows the outer perimeter of the park’s Nordic trail system. One lap of the scenic wooded course is 21 kilometers. The race starts at 9 a.m. There will be a heated waxing area at the chalet beginning at 6 a.m. Aid stations will provide fluids and fruit at several points along the course.
Registration is limited to 300 participants. To register, call 877-456-6443 toll-free. Participants also can register in person at the AmericInn Porcupine Mountain Lodge in Silver City on Jan. 31 from 7-10 p.m., and at the park’s Winter Sports Area Chalet from 6-8:30 a.m. on the day of the race.
The Porcupine Mountains Ski Marathon is sponsored by the Friends of the Porkies in cooperation with the DNR. Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park is located near Silver City, Michigan, 13 miles west of Ontonagon. For additional information, call 906-885-5275.
