2002-03 off-road vehicle grant applications available Michigan Department of Natural Resources officials today announced off-road vehicle grant applications are available to public agencies and nonprofit incorporated clubs and organizations. Applications are available for grants to maintain existing designated ORV trails, routes and use areas; repair public lands damaged by inappropriate ORV use; and develop new ORV trails, routes and use areas. Grant funds also are available to pay for liability insurance, leases or easements. "We currently maintain more than 3,100 miles of designated ORV trails and routes statewide," said DNR ORV program manager Steve Kubisiak. "We encourage participation from all user organizations and other public agencies to help us maintain Michigan's great ORV trail system." Projects that are given the highest priority address existing trail maintenance and restoration needs on public land. Applicants are encouraged to identify all trails, routes and areas they wish to maintain. Previous sponsors may expand their applications to include additional trail segments and areas to maintain. Grant applications must be postmarked by Aug. 1, 2002. Any public agency or organization that wants to receive an application should write to DNR, Grants Administration Division, Box 30425, Lansing, MI 48909-7925. Applications also may be requested by using the Grants Administration Division's 24-hour voicemail at 517-373-2724. For more information about the ORV program and application requirements, contact the ORV program staff in the DNR Parks and Recreation Bureau at 517-373-1665, or visit the DNR Web site at www.michigandnr.com.
