DNR HOSTS OPEN HOUSE ON CRYSTAL FALLS
FOREST MANAGEMENT UNIT LANSING--The Michigan Department of Natural Resources
will host an open house Tuesday, April 9, to provide
information and receive public comment on proposed forest
management activities to be done in 2003 in the Crystal
Falls Forest Management Unit. The open house will be held
from 2:30 to 5:30 p.m. at the DNR Field Office, 1420 US-2
West, Crystal Falls.
Each year, foresters and biologists inventory one-
tenth of the state forest. The information gathered includes
the health, quality and quantity of all vegetative types;
wildlife and fisheries habitat and needs; archaeological
sites; oil and gas activities; recreational use; and social
factors, including proximity to roads and neighborhoods.
Proposed treatments are designed to ensure the
sustainability of the resources in providing the variety of
values, uses and products that state lands offer to
Michigan's citizens.
This open house is an opportunity for interested
people to review proposed treatments and provide input
toward final decisions on those treatments. It also provides
the public an opportunity to talk with foresters and
biologists about issues of interest. Maps and information

Each forest management unit is divided into smaller
units or compartments to facilitate better administration of
the resources. Compartments in the following townships are
under review this year:
* Dickinson County: Waucedah, Felch, West Branch, Sagola,
Norway, Breen and Breitung townships
* Iron County: Crystal Falls, Mansfield and Mastodon
townships
A formal compartment review to decide prescriptions
for these areas is scheduled for April 25, beginning at 8:30
a.m., at the Crystal Falls Township Hall, 1384 West US-2,
Crystal Falls. Persons with disabilities needing
