| Fished today 200-500 ft of water and hooked up early on with a nice stealy (40 down over 220 on black/silver NK Mag), which unfortunately shook free before landing. Then around 9am we hooked up with our first king of the season...although he was only about 3 lbs! 10' down over 350 150' ft back on a small Sutton silver/gold. Great fighter though! Had a couple other releases with nobody home around the 300 ft mark and all on silver/black NK's. We are thinking of trying east of Oswego tomorrow.....we'll see.... |
| Lakers on the surface?: Port Bay , NY
Posted by: Finders Keepers ........... Email: phattreefrog@hotmail.com Date Posted: 08:01:46 6/23/03 |
| We went out this past Saturday and hooked up with two lakers (12, 4 lbs) 10 ft down 100 ft back over 300, with sutton silver/gold spoons. That's the 1st time we have caught lakers on the surface like that, but I guess with the colder lake waters (48 on saturday) its reasonable. We also gave the bass a go, catching only one really nice small mouth in the lake in 15' of water on a frog stickbait. In Port Bay we did well, catching 15 large mouth bass (3 in the 2-3 lb class) came close to shore, since they are probably still on their beds, so keeping the weeds off of the spinnerbaits was a chore! Anyone else have any luck? Tim :-) |

| Well, the weatherman is still getting it right, for a change,we are still getting unseasonably cold temps& as I write this, we're still getting light snow. The good news is that warming trends are beginning, and with that, fishing just can't be far away! The heavy snowpack should keep our spring water levels up& runoff will be pretty good. This equates to good brown and spring fishing in general. The PortBay area is noted for it's great brown trout fishery, and I'm looking forward to another good season. With a "normal" winter almost behind us, the regular progression of warming should occur bringing the bait & fish movements inshore. The lake temps are much colder this winter than the last 2 years, and we still have ice built up along the shoreline. The spring runoff will be a significant factor in the early seson this year.Start with bodybaits rappalas,Smithwicks,Yozuris,T-sticks and strech'em out on the boards vary your speeds as these days, the fish seem to be more finicky with the clearer water.Another thing we had pretty good success was light lines (6-8#) and flourocarbon leaders on noodle rods. Not only did we have a ball with the smaller fish, the win-loss ratio seemed to be much better. Colors seemed to be more natural, black/silver combinations, greens, &whites. 3 or 4 more weeks and we'll be back on the water again. On a serious note, Don't Forget To Support Our Troops Overseas! |

| We have been catching Chinook Salmon for the past week. There are mature salmon in our area from Sodus Bay area to Fair Haven. Most of the guides have been fishing from 80'-250' of water. The charter guides have been using flashers and flies, flashers and cut-bait. and Northern King spoons. We have been getting one to five salmon strikes per day, this is not alot of action but from the statius of lake Ontario, this is not too bad. Good Luck with your next visit. Capt. Frank and Capt. | Port Bay Fishing Report, the weather has been unseasonably warm, with the onshore fishing very spotty. Some Brown Trout action is being found in scattered pockets along the lakeshore, very little bait is being seen inshore. Offshore in the mid depths (40-80 ft.) some light steelhead activity has been seen in the last couple of days, now, after this most recent cold snap, and heavy N-NE winds, more change will affect the fish yet again. One thing that should be remembered, is that we are coming out of a very unusual winter to say the least! We are catching smallmouth bass inshore a month and a half ahead of when they generally show up! The feeling is that when the weather stabilizes so will the fishing. Offshore fishing for Lake Trout in the 150-200 ft. rage has been pretty good when the winds allow effective trolling speeds. Peanuts in the green, chartreuse, orange,silver/red combos, as well as spin-n-glos behind the usual jingle bells work very well, as well as the salmon flies that made their big comeback last year also behind the bells. Blue/silver &greensilver have been the most popular.Good luck and good fishing. Capt. Randy McCoy Argo Charters/Port Bay Marina www.portbaymarina.com |

| Well Port Bay is still closed off from Lake Ontario, until the 1st of April. The contract to keep Port Bay open to the lake is April 1- October 31st. There is perch fishing in Port Bay, from shore and by fishing from your boat. The state of New York has finished the road to the state launch at the end of West Port Bay RD Now for the important news, the brown trout are starting to move around. Capt. Joe Canizzio spent Saturday morning casting stick baits from the pier at Port Bay, he landed two brown trout in 15 minutes time. So get your tackle boxes out, sharpen your hooks and start working the mouths of any tributary that feed into Lake Ontario !!!!!!!!!!!!! Remember to bring the family along, teach the kids to enjoy the outdoors. Hope to see you, Capt. Frank |

| Well if you put your time in on the big waters of Lake Ontario you can be rewarded. Most people feel that you have to rush to the rivers now to catch some salmon, not true! Speaking for myself, I've had to work hard for the fish I'm catching. But we had a nice catch of 4 Chinook, And 1 Coho Salmon today, the fish weighed from 12-28lbs.for the Kings and 9lbs. for the Coho. The winds stop blowing from the south and switched to the NW. and got lumpy, this lowered the thermal Cline down We fished in 125' of water, where the bait and fish we marked were down from 85-125' down. Four of those fish came on Northern King spoons, only one was caught on Cut-bait. So don't put the boats away yet, go out and catch the fever.... Capt. Frank and Charlie DeNoto |

| I was recently fishing right out of the salmon river probably 100 yards out from the inlet to the lake. It was still a little too hot for salmon, but drifting nightcrawlers in 12-20 feet of water was where it was at. I hooked into at least 20 fish, and landed at least 10 over 3 pounds, 3 over 5 pounds, and one beast at six and a half pounds. Anchor near the rocks of the inlet, and don't be dumb like me and use ultra-lights with 4 pound test! |

| We are still fishing for Salmon in 100-150' off of Port Bay. The bait and fish are still from 65- to 115' down. Cut-bait and Northern King spoons are still what most the guides from the area are trolling with. Brown trout, steelheads, and Kings are still active. The derby winning salmon was taken just East of Port Bay, so have plenty of good monofiliment spooled up on your reels. The smallmouth fishing is still excellent, working from 18-35'. Now that crawfish are becoming harder to buy, think of gearing up to minnow's. good luck this weekend, don't forget that your kids need a break from studying their homework, bring them along!!!!!!! They boated three brown trout, one mature salmon, two smallmouth bass and had two other fish {trout} We fished in 75'-100' of water in front of Port Bay. There was plenty of bait in the area. The fish came from 45' to 60' down, on cut bait/flashers, and on Northern King spoons,28 size. Also this week we ventured out to the 28'Bar 650' of water and caught salmon and trout offshore down 85-101'. using the same lure selection. Good Luck and enjoy the Great Lake Ontario. Don't forget that the smallmouth fishing is still second to none in our area, We fish live bait in 18'-35' of water. They make excellent meals. Capt. Port Bay/ Central Lake Ontario...... Hot one day cold the next. We get a pattern down for taking some nice Chinook salmon, feeding on Northern King spoons and Cut-Bait, and the next trip out everything is gone. Bait and hungry fish are gone from the screen, So then we go searching again. This seems to be the census for the area from Sodus Bay to Oswego... There are some nice fish being taken, Steelheads, Browns, Coho's and Chinooks. The fall derby has started so alot of fishermen are covering the Lake. The weather has been in our favor, to work the lake.By checking out the photo pages of different guides including myself. You will see payoff for fishing Lake Ontario. Also in one of the photo's is a catch of smallmouth bass, great fighting fish, and excellent on the table.. So come enjoy the tail end of summer and take home some great memories. Capt. From the Port Bay area/central Lake Ontario we have been taking some mature Chinook salmon, with the occasional Coho salmon. Brown trout and Lake trout are also on the bite. From the fishermen and Charter Captains that I speak to everyday. While no big catches are taken everyday, if you spend the time on the Great Lake, you will come home with some big fish and some great memories. We have been taking fish from 100' depth of the lake all the way to 700' just by watching the temperature of the thermalcline. Several boats have been taking mature kings in 41.0 to 44.0 degree water, which is below the bait marking on the videograph. More oxygen in colder water, then the rise to feed. Just my theory!!!!! Also the smallmouth bass fishing has been second to none, you can use nightcrawlers, crawfish, or minnows, and even jigs. So pack up the family or get your fishing buddies together this weekend and enjoy more great Lake Ontario memories. Capt. Frank and Charlie DeNoto |

| Chinook salmon have been the target fish for the Port Bay area for about one month now. With some kings weighing 15-30 lbs. the battles have been great. Currently most of the boats have been working the 300-600' range downrigging about 70-110'down. Cut-bait with flashers, and NK Magnum spoons have been working best for us. But listening on the vhf radio { ch. 14} sportfishermen have been using other lures and trolling techniques. The smallmouth fishing has been going strong also, in 10-30' of water... So while the weather upstate has been warm and dry gather your friends or family and head to Lake Ontario, Port Bay and catch some memories. Capt.Frank and Capt. Charlie DeNoto |

Well in the Port Bay area of Lake Ontario King salmon are being taken. The average fish weighs 15-25 lbs. Some brown trout and Lake trout have been on the bite also. The water temperature has been upwelling near shore, so in 60-150' of water the fish have been taken from 30-60' down. Offshore on the 24-27 bar North Latitude the fish have been taken from 75-110' down. Cut bait and Northern King lures have been the baits of choice for the Port Bay guides. The smallmouth fishing has been slow due to upwelling in front of Port Bay, the heavy moss still in the 15-30' range. Just get out there and have fun, and you will come home with some nice fish. Independence Day came on the 5th of July!!!! After searching for the fall run of Chinook Salmon. On the 5th of July while fishing the deep water off Port Bay. We captured 3 mature salmon, and put 1 nice Skamania Steelhead in the catch. working the 500-700' waters with the temperature 25' down to 80' down. there is plenty of bait and fish in the area. We used Northern King spoons, and after cleaning the catch, the alewifes in the stomachs of the fish were all large. So if the weather allows you to run offshore this weekend, that would be a good place to start catching some mature salmon. In the shallow waters 100-150' the temperature is 90- to 130' down, with some brown trout being taken. Good Luck on your next adventure, Capt. Frank and Charlie |
