Meetings to Discuss Draft Kalamazoo River Assessment

The status and future of the Kalamazoo River are the topics of public meetings scheduled in southwest Michigan in June to be conducted by the Fisheries Division of the Department of Natural Resources to receive comments on the Draft Kalamazoo River Assessment.

The meetings will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. at the following locations:

Allegan Kalamazoo
Allegan Area Community Center Oshtemo Public Library
330 Trowbridge Street 7265 West Main
June 6, 2005 June 8, 2005

Battle Creek Albion
Department of Public Works Albion City Hall
City of Battle Creek 112 Cass Street
150 S. Kendall Street June 9, 2005

"The Kalamazoo River has undergone significant change in the past 30 years," said Jay Wesley,
southern Lake Michigan unit supervisor for the DNR's Fisheries Division. "Water quality continues to improve providing better conditions for fish and other aquatic species."

The intent of the meetings is to receive public feedback on the draft assessment and for proposed management options for the river. Public comment will be received until July 2005. The river assessment will be used by Fisheries Division and by other agencies and organizations to develop management plans and actions for the river.
