Winter Free Fishing Weekend Feb. 19-20

State Department of Natural Resources officials today announced
Michigan's annual Winter Free Fishing Weekend Feb. 19-20, when fishing
license fees are waived for residents and nonresidents. All other
fishing regulations still apply.

In 2004, DNR Director Rebecca Humphries signed an order which
permanently designated Winter Free Fishing Weekend as the Saturday and
Sunday preceding the observance of President's Day. Anglers, 17 or
older, who plan to fish on this holiday, Feb. 21, will need a valid
fishing license.

Winter Free Fishing Weekend encourages people to discover that Michigan
provides great fishing fun all year-round. Individuals who wish to try
ice fishing, whether using hand-held lines, tip-ups, or trying their
hand at spear fishing, will uncover a new winter adventure that can be
fun for the entire family. With a few simple safety tips, such as using
caution when traveling across any ice, dressing appropriately for the
weather, using the buddy system and always wearing a life jacket,
individuals can enjoy a respite from the long days of winter while
spending quality time with family and friends. It also is a great time
to introduce someone new to the sport of fishing through the ice.

The DNR offers several online resources to help both first-time and
experienced anglers maximize fishing opportunities throughout the state.
Anglers can buy licenses online, review weekly fishing reports, access
inland lake maps that show depths and contours, get current fish
stocking information and locate access sites by county or waterbody
through the Michigan Recreational Boating Information System.
