Waterfowl Festival offers family fun

The annual Pointe Mouillee Waterfowl Festival will be held from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m on Sept. 6-7, at the Pointe Mouillee State Game Area.

The event includes the 56th Duck Hunters Tournament, where hunters compete in sneak boat, layout boat, and marsh shooting events. Punt boat and rowing races also are included in the river events. The Midwest Decoy Contest includes decoy and bird carvers from Canada and the USA competing for blue ribbons and prize money.

The Wildlife Art Show hosts wildlife artists and suppliers from all corners of the USA and Canada. The “Greatest Outdoor Trading Post” features booths selling and trading all kinds of outdoor fishing, hunting, and camping equipment and supplies.

Kid’s games and activities include a BB gun shoot sponsored by Daisy, an archery shoot sponsored by Gander Mountain, face painting, clowns, and waterfowl-related games. Adults compete at chainsaw carving, fly-tying, and small boat building. Dog retriever events are scheduled for Saturday and Sunday. Food for the event is supplied by Ray’s Prime Meats of Taylor.

Pointe Mouillee State Game Area is located at the mouth of the Huron River separating, Wayne and Monroe counties at Lake Erie, in Brownstown Township, near Rockwood.

All proceeds from this annual event benefit wetland restorations and wildlife habitat improvements at the game area, the largest freshwater marsh restoration project in the world.

This year’s festival is dedicated to Jack Harbison, of Redford, for his contributions to wetlands, waterfowl, wildlife, and the sportspeople of Michigan. Harbison was the festival director for many years. An avid waterfowler, he was dedicated to the improvement of the Pointe Mouillee State Game Area.
