Date changed for Newberry forest compartment review

Michigan Department of Natural Resources officials today announced the compartment review for the Lake Superior State Forest – Newberry Management Unit has been rescheduled from Dec. 18 to Jan. 28, 2003.

The formal review begins at 9 a.m. at the Best Western in Newberry. The DNR held a Nov. 13 open house in Newberry to provide the public an opportunity to review and comment on the proposed treatments to be done in 2004.

Forest management activities in Luce County are planned in the following townships: Lakefield, Columbus, Pentland, and McMillan. Forest management activities in Chippewa County are planned for Whitefish Township.

Each year, DNR personnel inventory one-tenth of the state forest. The information gathered includes the health, quality and quantity of all vegetative types; wildlife and fisheries habitat and needs; archaeological sites; oil and gas activities; recreational use; and social factors, including proximity to roads and neighborhoods. Proposed treatments are designed to ensure the sustainability of the resource in providing the variety of values, uses and products that state lands offer to Michigan's citizens. The compartment review finalizes these prescriptions by agreement between foresters, wildlife and fisheries biologists and other interested people.

Those with disabilities needing accommodations or seeking further information should contact Les Homan at 906-293-3293.
