DNR HOSTS TWO PUBLIC MEETINGS ON SAULT FOREST MANAGEMENT UNIT LANSING--The Michigan Department of Natural Resources will host two open houses April 1-2 to provide information and receive public comment on proposed forest management treatments to be done in 2003 in the Sault Forest Management Unit. On Monday, April 1, the Naubinway Field Office will host an open house from 4 to 7 p.m. at the DNR Field Office, W11569 East US-2, Naubinway. The open house for the Sault Field Office will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. on Tuesday, April 2, at the Kinross Town Hall, 4884 W. Curtis Road, Kincheloe. Each year, foresters and biologists inventory one- tenth of the state forest. The information gathered includes the health, quality and quantity of all vegetative types; wildlife and fisheries habitat and needs; archaeological sites; oil and gas activities; recreational use; and social factors, including proximity to roads and neighborhoods. Proposed treatments are designed to ensure the sustainability of the resource in providing the variety of values, uses and products that state lands offer to Michigan's citizens. This open house is an opportunity for interested people to review proposed treatments and provide input toward final decisions on those treatments. It also provides the public an opportunity to talk with foresters and biologists about issues of interest. Maps and information that will be available at the open house can be accessed on the DNR Web site at www.michigandnr.com. Click on Compartment Reviews under Resource & Conservation Management. Each forest management unit is divided into smaller units or compartments to facilitate better administration of the resources. Compartments in the following townships are under review this year: * Chippewa County (Sault): Superior, Pickford, Kinross, and Drummond Island townships * Mackinac County (Naubinway): Moran, Hudson, Hendricks, Newton, Portage, and (Sault) Clark townships A formal compartment review to decide prescriptions for these areas is scheduled for April 18, beginning at 9 a.m. at State Street Village Inn, 250 South State Street, St. Ignace.
