DNR HOSTS OPEN HOUSE ON SHINGLETON FOREST MANAGEMENT UNIT LANSING--The Michigan Department of Natural Resources will host an open house Monday, April 8, to provide information and receive public comment on proposed forest management treatments to be done in 2003 in the Shingleton Forest Management Unit. DNR officials also will review Compartment 84 for the 2006 Year of Entry because of continuing forest health concerns in various jack pine stands. The open house will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Munising Township Hall, E9630 Prospect Street, Wetmore. Each year, foresters and biologists inventory one-tenth of the state forest. The information gathered includes the health, quality and quantity of all vegetative types; wildlife and fisheries habitat and needs; archaeological sites; oil and gas activities; recreational use; and social factors, including proximity to roads and neighborhoods. Proposed treatments are designed to ensure the sustainability of the resources in providing the variety of values, uses and products that state lands offer to Michigan's citizens. The open house is an opportunity for interested people to review proposed treatments and provide input toward final decisions on those treatments. It also provides the public an opportunity to talk with foresters and biologists about issues of interest. Maps and information that will be available at the open house can be accessed by visiting the DNR Web site at www.michigandnr.com. Each forest management unit is divided into smaller sections or compartments to facilitate better administration of the resource. Compartments in the following townships are under review this year: * Schoolcraft County: Germfask, Hiawatha, Inwood, Manistique, Seney and Thompson townships * Alger County: Munising and Burt townships * Delta County: Garden Township A formal compartment review to finalize prescriptions for these areas is scheduled for April 23, beginning at 9:30 a.m., at the Comfort Inn, 726 East Lakeshore Drive, Manistique.
