DNR HOSTS OPEN HOUSE ON NEWBERRY FOREST MANAGEMENT UNIT LANSING--The Michigan Department of Natural Resources will host an open house Tuesday, March 19, to provide information and receive public comment on proposed forest management treatments to be done in 2003 in the Newberry Forest Management Unit, Lake Superior State Forest. The open house will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. at the McMillan Town Hall, 405 Newberry Ave., Newberry. Each year, foresters and biologists inventory one-tenth of the state forest. The information gathered includes the health, quality and quantity of all vegetative types; wildlife and fisheries habitat and needs; archaeological sites; oil and gas activities; recreational use; and social factors, including proximity to roads and neighborhoods. Proposed treatments are designed to ensure the sustainability of the resources in providing the variety of values, uses and products that state lands offer to Michigan's citizens. The open house is an opportunity for interested people to review proposed treatments and provide input toward final decisions on those treatments. It also provides the public an opportunity to talk with foresters and biologists about issues of interest. Maps and information that will be available at the open house can be accessed by visiting the DNR Web site at www.michigandnr.com. Each forest management unit is divided into smaller sections or compartments to facilitate better administration of the resources. Compartments in the following townships are under review this year: * Luce County: Columbus, Lakefield, McMillan and Pentland townships * Chippewa County: Hulbert and Whitefish townships A formal compartment review to decide prescriptions for these areas is scheduled for April 16, beginning at 9 a.m., at the Newberry Comfort Inn.
