DNR HOSTS OPEN HOUSE ON GWINN FOREST MANAGEMENT UNIT

LANSING--The Michigan Department of Natural Resources
will host an open house Monday, March 25, to provide
information and receive public comment on proposed forest
management activities to be done in 2003 in the Gwinn Forest
Management Unit. The open house will be held from 3 to 7
p.m. at the Marquette Township Hall, 161 Co. Rd. 492,
Marquette.
Each year, foresters and biologists inventory one-
tenth of the state forest. The information gathered includes
the health, quality and quantity of all vegetative types;
wildlife and fisheries habitat and needs; archaeological
sites; oil and gas activities; recreational use; and social
factors, including proximity to roads and neighborhoods.
Proposed treatments are designed to ensure the
sustainability of the resource in providing the variety of
values, uses and products that state lands offer to
Michigan's citizens.
This open house is an opportunity for interested
people to review proposed treatments and provide input
toward final decisions on those treatments. It also provides
the public an opportunity to talk with foresters and
biologists about issues of interest. Maps and information
that will be available at the open house can be accessed on
the DNR Web site at www.michigandnr.com. Click on
Compartment Reviews under Resource & Conservation

the resources. Compartments in the following townships are
under review this year:
* Marquette County: Turin, Forsyth, Wells, Ewing, Ely,
Richmond, Tilden, Sands and Chocolay townships.
* Alger County: Rockriver Township.

A formal compartment review to decide prescriptions
for these areas is scheduled for April 24, beginning at 9
a.m. at the Garden Room Restaurant, 2050 US-41 South,
Marquette. Persons with disabilities needing accommodations
for these meetings should contact Bill Brondyke at 906-346-
9201.
