DETROIT EDISON TREE PLANTING GRANTS AWARDED LANSING--Grants totaling $67,610 have been awarded to 20 Michigan communities for tree planting projects in southeastern Michigan. The grant program, now in its third year, is funded by Detroit Edison and administered by the Department of Natural Resources Urban and Community Forestry Program. More than 13 million trees have been planted in the 13 counties that make up the Detroit Edison service area since the program began in 1998. The grant program was developed in partnership with Detroit Edison, the principle operating subsidiary of DTE Energy Co., to improve environmental quality and quality of life in our urban and suburban communities through planting and maintaining healthy trees. Healthy trees remove carbon dioxide from the air by sequestering carbon and releasing oxygen. The program is part of DTE Energy's voluntary participation in the U.S. Department of Energy Climate Challenge Program. Please call the contact listed above for this year's award recipients.
