CLEAN MICHIGAN INITIATIVE PROJECTS
UNDERWAY AT WATERLOO RECREATION AREA

LANSING--The Portage Lake campground in Waterloo State
Recreation Area will be closed this season to allow for
major additions and upgrades through the Clean Michigan
Initiative, Department of Natural Resources officials
announced today. The environmental bond program, approved by
voters in 1998, is providing $50 million to the DNR to make
important infrastructure improvements within our state parks
system.
Portage Lake campground, construction will include:
* two new, fully accessible toilet/shower buildings
* the electrical system in the campground's north loop will
be upgraded and modernized
* A new water and sewer system will be added
* roads will be repaved
* a new registration office will be built
* fully accessible playground equipment will be installed
* and views of Portage Lake will be opened for all
campground visitors to enjoy
Rodney Stokes, DNR Parks and Recreation Bureau Chief,
stresses that campers have been informed of the closure
through the Central Reservation System and directed to other
available campsites in the system.
"Our first priority is to make sure our camper's are aware
of the closing of the campground well in advance, so they
can make other plans without any disruption of their summer
vacation," Stokes said. "The information was provided to the
operators taking calls to our toll-free central reservation
system, and campers were informed of the closing when they
called to make their summer camping reservations."
