CLEAN MICHIGAN INITIATIVE PROJECTS UNDERWAY AT WATERLOO RECREATION AREALANSING--The Portage Lake campground in Waterloo State Recreation Area will be closed this season to allow for major additions and upgrades through the Clean Michigan Initiative, Department of Natural Resources officials announced today. The environmental bond program, approved by voters in 1998, is providing $50 million to the DNR to make important infrastructure improvements within our state parks system. Portage Lake campground, construction will include: * two new, fully accessible toilet/shower buildings * the electrical system in the campground's north loop will be upgraded and modernized * A new water and sewer system will be added * roads will be repaved * a new registration office will be built * fully accessible playground equipment will be installed * and views of Portage Lake will be opened for all campground visitors to enjoy Rodney Stokes, DNR Parks and Recreation Bureau Chief, stresses that campers have been informed of the closure through the Central Reservation System and directed to other available campsites in the system. "Our first priority is to make sure our camper's are aware of the closing of the campground well in advance, so they can make other plans without any disruption of their summer vacation," Stokes said. "The information was provided to the operators taking calls to our toll-free central reservation system, and campers were informed of the closing when they called to make their summer camping reservations."
