DNR SEEKS INPUT ON MENONINEE RIVER NATURAL RESOURCES AREA LANSING--The Michigan Department of Natural Resources will host an open house March 15, 2000, to provide information and allow for public comment on proposed management of the Menominee River Natural Resources Area. This tract, which includes five miles of frontage on the Menominee River, was purchased from the Wisconsin Public Service Corporation by two conservation organizations, and will be gifted to the state later this year. In all, 4,450 acres were purchased, including 2,530 acres in Michigan and 1,920 acres in Wisconsin. The Michigan property is located in Faithorn and Holmes townships, Menominee County. An effort to develop a management plan for this property has been underway since October 1998. This effort included joint planning sessions between Michigan and Wisconsin DNR staff specialists, several public listening sessions and involvement of a focus group composed of interested citizens. The March 15 open house will be an opportunity for the public to review draft plans for managing the property and to discuss their views with DNR professionals representing Forest Management, Wildlife, Fisheries and Law Enforcement divisions. The open house will be held from 6:30 to 9 p.m. (Central Time) at the Menominee County Annex Building located on US- 41 in Stephenson. For additional information, contact Dennis Nezich, District Forest Manager, at 906-786-2354.
